Originals and copies of documents created and received by the office of the Commissioner of Health, Welfare and Charity between 1921 and 1968. These records include reports, receipts, vouchers and correspondence covering the wide variety of issues handled by the department.

The collection is open for research. However, the series contains information protected by the Government Records Access Management Act (GRAMA) and the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Historical note

The Salt Lake County Department of Health, Welfare and Charity was an agency that provided services aimed at the general well-being of county society. The scopes of the services that it provided included, but were not limited to, sanitation, public safety, medical care, construction projects, tax abatements, financial aid and education. The need for these services increased dramatically during the years of the Great Depression as reflected in the number of citizens seeking abatements or aid in some form. Population growth and rising expenses after World War II forced county officials to seek out ways of continuing to provide the same level of services to the public. By the 1970s additional administrative offices had been established to provide the services once performed by the Department of Health, Welfare and Charity.
